Volunteer positions include classroom aide, adult literacy training, patient care services in hospitals or nursing homes, docent tours in museums, sales clerks in thrift stores, delivering meals to the homebound, clerical assistance in nonprofit agencies, and a variety of other opportunities.
RSVP volunteers serve without compensation, but are reimbursed for transportation expenses. Insurance protection is also provided while volunteers are on assignment.
RSVP volunteers receive a brief orientation from RSVP staff on their role in the program. They are apprised of community volunteer service opportunities that are available and are put in touch with representatives of the agencies in which they are interested. After placement, volunteers receive orientation, training and supervision from their agency.
RSVP volunteers serve through a variety of nonprofit and civic organizations, designated as volunteer stations. The stations include schools, libraries, day care centers, police stations, hospitals, nursing homes, museums, literacy programs, and other community and social service organizations.
